Fire at St James Park: Minor Damage, Investigation Underway
An investigation is under way after a fire broke out at Exeter City Football Club's St James Park late on Wednesday, leaving a small area of the stadium damaged.
Firefighters were called at about 22:00 GMT after smoke was seen billowing from a portacabin near the Well Street end of the ground. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze started in an electrical unit and spread into a temporary building on site that houses the stadium's control room.
The fire service initially sent three crews and later dispatched two additional crews when flames threatened a nearby stand. A fire spokesperson said "fire crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to prevent the fire escalating."
By around midnight the fire had been brought under control and fully extinguished; ventilation fans were then used to clear lingering smoke from the stadium. No injuries were reported, and the club thanked members of the public who reported the incident and the fire crews for their rapid response.
Exeter City FC: "We will be assessing the damage today and will update when we have more information. Thank you to the public and to the fire crews for bringing the incident under control."
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said a full inspection and investigation will be completed in daylight hours to establish the cause and timeline of the fire.
The club recalled a previous incident in 2016 when the old Stagecoach stand caught fire; that stand has since been replaced by the Adam Stansfield stand.
