Louvre Heist Probe Widens: Two More Charged as DNA and Airport Arrests Link Suspects to €88M Apollo Gallery Theft

The Louvre Museum investigation expanded after Paris prosecutors charged two more people in connection with the Oct. 19 Apollo Gallery heist, bringing the number charged to four and total arrests to seven. The daytime break-in lasted less than eight minutes and netted jewels valued at about €88 million. Authorities said DNA evidence linked suspects to a getaway scooter and a display case, and one suspect was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport while trying to flee. Magistrates ordered the newly charged held as investigators continue to probe the broader network behind the raid.

Louvre heist investigation expands as prosecutors file new charges

Paris prosecutors said two additional people have been formally charged in last month’s daring theft at the Louvre Museum, bringing the number of suspects charged in the case to four and the total arrests to seven. The Oct. 19 daylight raid on the museum’s Apollo Gallery reportedly lasted under eight minutes and resulted in the theft of jewels valued at about €88 million (roughly $102 million).

New charges and custody order

A 38-year-old woman from the Paris suburb of La Courneuve was taken into custody and charged with complicity in organized theft and criminal conspiracy, prosecutors told Reuters. A 37-year-old man was also arrested and charged with theft and criminal conspiracy. Both deny involvement, according to reporting from the BBC.

A magistrate judge ordered the two newly charged suspects to remain in custody amid concerns they could collude with others to destroy evidence while the investigation continues.

Earlier arrests linked by DNA and an airport intercept

Two suspects arrested earlier have already been charged with criminal conspiracy and theft committed by an organized gang. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said one of those detainees is a 34-year-old Algerian national who has lived in France since 2010; he was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to leave for Algeria on a one-way ticket. Authorities say his DNA was matched to a scooter used in the getaway.

Another suspect, a 39-year-old man from Aubervilliers, was arrested at his home and is known to police for multiple prior theft convictions. Investigators reportedly linked his DNA to a glass display case that contained the stolen jewels and to several items left at the scene.

Ongoing probe

Prosecutors continue to investigate the network behind the operation and how the gang planned and executed the targeted raid on the Apollo Gallery. International outlets reporting on the case include Reuters and the BBC; prosecutors have publicly named Laure Beccuau in statements about the arrests.

Key facts: Oct. 19 daytime raid, under eight minutes; €88 million in jewels taken; seven arrests so far, four people formally charged; DNA and airport evidence linked suspects to the crime; investigation ongoing.
