At Least 23 Killed in Devastating Fire at Waldo’s Store in Hermosillo, Sonora

Deadly Blaze at Waldo’s Outlet in Hermosillo

A fire tore through an outlet of the Waldo’s chain in Hermosillo, the capital of the northern Mexican state of Sonora, killing at least 23 people, Governor Alfonso Durazo said Saturday in an online address.

Durazo said authorities have confirmed 23 fatalities and that 11 people are being treated at various hospitals in the city. He added that some of the victims were minors, a detail that underscored the scale of the tragedy.

Victim breakdown: Local radio station Uniradio Sonora, citing Carlos Freaner, president of the Mexican Red Cross, reported the victims included 12 women, five men, four boys and two girls.

"This tragedy has left a deep sadness among all the people of Sonora," Governor Durazo said.

President Claudia Sheinbaum offered her condolences and said she had instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez to dispatch a government support team to assist the families and the injured.

The Sonora Public Security Secretariat posted on X that investigators do not believe the blaze resulted from arson or any other intentional act of violence, though it provided no further details about the cause. Authorities continue to examine the scene and investigate how the fire began and spread inside the commercial outlet.

Emergency responders and hospital staff remain engaged in rescue, treatment and support efforts as inquiries continue.
