Deadly explosion at Waldo’s supermarket in Hermosillo
A powerful explosion at a Waldo’s supermarket in Hermosillo, the capital of the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, has killed at least 23 people — including children — and wounded at least 11, local officials said.
The blast occurred on Saturday at about 2pm local time (20:00 GMT) inside the store. Images circulated by local media showed the supermarket's front charred by fire and its windows blown out; nearby businesses temporarily closed to help prevent the fire from spreading.
Investigators probe transformer; attack ruled out
The Sonora prosecutor’s office said investigators are operating on the working assumption that the incident was accidental and are examining a transformer located inside the store. Local public security authorities earlier said they had ruled out an "attack" or any event linked to intentional violence against civilians.
"A number of the victims" were minors, Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video message, adding that survivors were receiving treatment in Hermosillo hospitals.
Durazo said he had ordered an extensive and transparent investigation to determine the causes and identify anyone responsible. He praised emergency, security and health services for responding quickly and professionally to control the situation and save lives.
National response and context
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences on X to the families and loved ones of the victims. She said she had been in contact with Governor Durazo and had instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez to send a support team to assist families and the injured.
The explosion occurred over the weekend as Mexico observed the Day of the Dead, when families honor deceased relatives. Authorities continue to investigate the precise cause while offering support to survivors and families of the victims.
