Stabbing on Doncaster–to–London train near Huntingdon
British Transport Police (BTP) say 10 people were taken to hospital after a mass stabbing on a London-bound train on Saturday evening, with nine of the injured reported to have life‑threatening wounds. The force declared the event a major incident, and Counter Terrorism Policing is supporting the investigation.
BTP said the attack occurred on the Doncaster to London King’s Cross service as it pulled into Huntingdon, a market town a few miles northwest of Cambridge and roughly 75 miles north of London. Emergency services — including armed officers and air ambulances — were called to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. local time.
“Ten people have been taken to hospital with nine believed to have suffered life‑threatening injuries,” the force said. “This has been declared a major incident and Counter Terrorism Policing are supporting our investigation whilst we work to establish the full circumstances and motivation for this incident.”
Two people were arrested at Huntingdon station, police said. The East of England Ambulance Service posted on X that it had “transported multiple patients to hospital.” BTP, which leads security on the rail network, said investigators are continuing to establish the full circumstances and any possible motive.
Witnesses described chaotic and distressing scenes aboard the train. The Times reported a witness saw a man carrying a large knife and said there was “blood everywhere,” with some passengers hiding in toilets and others trampled as people tried to flee.
Paul Bristow, mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said on X he had heard reports of “horrendous scenes.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack an “appalling incident” and urged people in the area to follow police advice, adding his thanks to the emergency services and his thoughts for those affected.
Police urged anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact British Transport Police as inquiries continue.
