Caleb Flynn, 40, a former pastor and one-time "American Idol" contestant, was convicted on Sept. 29 of aggravated murder and related charges in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors say he shot her in their bed, staged the scene to look like a burglary and had motive tied to an extramarital affair and financial and reputational gains. The jury deliberated about two and a half hours; Flynn faces up to life without parole and is set to be sentenced at 3 p.m. ET Monday. The defense calls the evidence circumstantial and plans to appeal.

Caleb Flynn, 40, a former pastor who once appeared on "American Idol" in 2013, was convicted on Sept. 29 of aggravated murder and related charges in the death of his wife, 37-year-old Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors say Flynn shot his wife in their Tipp City, Ohio, home, staged the scene to appear like a burglary and then called 911 to report an intruder. His sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET on Monday; he faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Evidence and Prosecution Case

After nearly two and a half hours of deliberation, the jury found Flynn guilty on all counts, including murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. Prosecutors presented physical-scene evidence, digital records from the night of the shooting, Flynn's 911 call, and a side garage door they said had been altered to suggest forced entry.

"The evidence leads straight to the defendant," said Miami County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Joseph during closing arguments, outlining alleged motives including preserving a lucrative job with Ashley's family business, collecting life insurance and protecting Flynn's reputation as a worship leader.

Affair, Digital Messages and Testimony

Prosecutors called Flynn's former mistress to testify. Over two days she read from more than 100,000 messages exchanged between them, which the state said showed motive and planning. One message, quoted by the witness, included Flynn writing in May 2025: "If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat."

Defense Response and Trial Notes

Defense attorney Patrick Mulligan argued the state's case was circumstantial and stressed that the only undisputed fact proved was that Flynn had an extramarital affair. "Connecting a couple of meaningless dots doesn't solve the case," Mulligan told jurors. Flynn did not testify at trial, and the defense called no witnesses.

Mulligan said after the verdict that the defense expected to file a notice of appeal, citing a claimed lack of sufficient evidence on whether the killing was planned and premeditated.

Timeline

According to prosecutors, Flynn called 911 in the early hours of Feb. 16 to report that an intruder had shot his wife. He was arrested three days later. The jury returned guilty verdicts on Sept. 29.

Family Statement

In a statement read in court by Prosecuting Attorney Paul Watkins, Ashley Flynn's family said they "refuse to let the evil that ended Ashley's life have the final word in her story." The family praised her deep Christian faith, devotion to her children and the way she lived out her beliefs through kindness, prayer and service.

What Happens Next: Flynn's sentencing hearing will determine whether he receives a life sentence without parole. The defense has indicated it will pursue an appeal.
