Rep. Ro Khanna told NBC's Meet the Press that a third impeachment of President Trump would aim to set a clear standard of accountability if Democrats retake the House. He said impeachment would reaffirm constitutional limits on war-making, federal firings and foreign deals while Republicans and Democrats could still pursue a first-100-day economic agenda. Khanna also urged serious engagement with Iran's seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and criticized the president's recent U.N. remarks.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said Sunday on NBC News' Meet the Press that a third impeachment of President Donald Trump would aim to establish a firm standard of accountability if Democrats reclaim the House in November's midterm elections.

Impeachment As A Statement

Khanna rejected the notion that pursuing impeachment would be a strategic mistake, arguing it would uphold constitutional principles and serve as a clear boundary for presidential conduct.

"Impeachment says that you can't get into an illegal war in Iran without constitutional approval. Impeachment says that you can't just start firing federal employees in defiance of what Congress says. Impeachment says you can't do deals with foreign governments to allegedly enrich your own family. It's about setting a standard." — Rep. Ro Khanna

Balancing Accountability With Voters' Concerns

Khanna emphasized that holding an administration accountable and addressing voters' pocketbook issues are not mutually exclusive. "The Democrats can impeach to uphold constitutional values and, at the same time, have a first-hundred-day agenda that deals with the cost of living," he said, arguing both tracks can proceed in parallel.

Iran Proposal And U.N. Comments

Khanna urged the Biden administration to seriously engage with Iran's seven-day proposal intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and secure a ceasefire, while noting the U.S. would not need to accept every Iranian condition. "In my view, the biggest thing that we need to give the Iranians is an ironclad commitment that we will not have [a] regime-change war," he said.

He also criticized President Trump's recent United Nations remarks threatening further military action against Iran and questioned the administration's public claims regarding the destruction of Iran's nuclear facilities.

Who Would Lead Accountability Efforts

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has indicated that senior Democrats on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees would lead any effort to hold the administration accountable if their party wins the majority.
