The House on Tuesday blocked Representative Al Green’s long-shot impeachment effort against President Donald Trump after 18 House Democrats joined 213 Republicans to table the measure. Another 46 House Democrats—including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-CA)—voted "present."
Party Leaders Cite Need for Investigation
Although a broad majority of House Democrats initially supported advancing the resolution, senior party leaders declined to endorse the move. In a joint statement, Jeffries, Clark and Aguilar called impeachment "a sacred constitutional vehicle designed to hold a corrupt executive accountable for abuse of power, breaking the law and violating the public trust," and said it "traditionally requires a comprehensive investigative process." They added that "none of that serious work has been done," and announced they would vote "present" while focusing the party’s message on economic issues.
Allegations in Green’s Articles
Green filed articles of impeachment in late August alleging that the Trump administration abused presidential powers by launching an immigration crackdown that "terrorized" communities and transformed American democracy "into an authoritarian regime, where unjustified killings and coverups by ICE and CBP are normalized."
