House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., did not rule out the possibility that Democrats could pursue impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump if they retake the House in the 2026 midterm elections. Jeffries emphasized that any decision would be guided by the Constitution and led by committee experts rather than by partisan impulse.
On ABC's This Week, Jeffries said, "No, we haven't ruled anything in and we haven't ruled anything out in terms of impeachment." He added that he would defer to members of the House Judiciary Committee — including Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) — and Democrats on the Oversight Committee, such as Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), to evaluate any potential steps.
"[And] be guided by the Constitution, and then let the chips fall where they may, in the best interests of the American people, so that the House, once again, can function like a separate and co-equal branch of government and a check and balance on an out-of-control executive branch," Jeffries said.
Trump was impeached twice during his presidency and was acquitted by the Senate both times. He has repeatedly warned that Democrats would move to impeach him if they regain a House majority; at a recent rally he said, "They're going to impeach me. They have no idea why."
Jeffries reiterated a commitment to hold those he says harmed the public accountable. "If someone has been screwing over the American people, shortchanging the American people, or stealing from the American people, they're going to be held accountable under a Democratic majority," he said.
At the same time, Jeffries left the door open for bipartisan cooperation, saying Democrats are willing to work across the aisle on issues where common ground exists. He pointed to recent bipartisan work on a housing affordability bill that became law as an example of how cooperation can produce results.
Ultimately, Jeffries said any move toward impeachment would be shaped by committee investigations, constitutional standards, and the judgment of House Democrats about what serves the national interest.
