Four Italian soldiers were wounded during a NATO exercise at the Adazi base in Latvia, with one reported in serious condition. Rome says the troops' vehicle was hit by fire from a machine gun mounted on an Italian Dardo armoured personnel carrier, though exact circumstances remain unclear. The wounded were taken to Riga for treatment and none are believed to be in life‑threatening condition. A military investigation has been opened to determine what happened.

Four Italian soldiers were wounded — one seriously — during a NATO training exercise at the Adazi military base in Latvia, the Italian Defence Ministry said.

According to officials in Rome, the troops' vehicle was struck by fire from a machine gun mounted on an Italian Dardo armoured personnel carrier while units were operating at the base roughly 25 kilometres from the capital, Riga. The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear, and a military investigation has been launched to establish the sequence of events.

The injured personnel were evacuated to medical facilities in Riga for treatment. The ministry added that none of the four are currently believed to be in life‑threatening condition.

Italy has deployed more than 300 soldiers to Latvia as part of a multinational NATO brigade based at Adazi. Troops from more than a dozen allied countries are stationed at the base; the brigade’s mission is to help defend NATO’s north‑eastern flank and deter potential threats to the Baltic states.

Investigation Under Way: Military authorities are probing whether the incident resulted from an accidental discharge, equipment malfunction or another cause; further details have not yet been released.
