A hallway fight at Glasgow High School in Newark on Sept. 14 escalated when a school resource officer searched a 17-year-old student's backpack and discovered a loaded handgun and a small quantity of marijuana, Delaware State Police reported.
What Happened
The altercation was reported at about 1 p.m. in a school hallway. School staff and the on-site resource officer intervened and separated the students involved. During the officer’s investigation, it was learned the teenager had removed his backpack prior to the confrontation.
A subsequent search of the bag turned up a small amount of marijuana and a loaded handgun. The 17-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fight and was taken to a hospital for treatment; no other injuries were reported.
Charges And Custody
After being discharged from medical care, the teen was transported to Delaware State Police Troop 2. He was charged with multiple felony counts, including:
- Possession of a firearm by a person under 21
- Possession of ammunition by a person under 21
- Possession of a firearm in a safe school zone
- Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
He also faces a charge of possession of marijuana under 18. The youth was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families on an $87,000 cash bond. Local reporting indicated he remained in custody as of the following Tuesday.
School And Law Enforcement Response
The Christina School District called the incident "unacceptable" and praised the quick actions of the resource officer, school staff and Delaware State Police. Corporal Rashawn Rich told local media that having a resource officer already on site helped prevent the situation from escalating further.
