A school resource officer at Glasgow High School in Newark, Delaware, discovered a loaded handgun and a small quantity of marijuana in a 17-year-old student's backpack after breaking up a hallway fight on Sept. 14 at about 1 p.m., authorities said.
What Happened
Delaware State Police reported that school staff and the resource officer intervened to separate students involved in the altercation. The officer learned the teen had removed and set his backpack aside before the fight. A subsequent search of the bag turned up a loaded firearm and a small amount of marijuana.
Injuries, Arrest and Charges
The 17-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the fight and was treated at a hospital. After he was discharged, police transported him to Troop 2 and charged him with several felony counts related to firearms and ammunition, plus a marijuana possession offense.
Charges reported: felony possession of a firearm by a person under 21; felony possession of ammunition by a person under 21; felony possession of a firearm in a safe school zone; felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; and possession of marijuana under 18.
Detention And Response
The teen was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families on an $87,000 cash bond. The Christina School District called the incident unacceptable and commended the quick response of school staff, the resource officer and Delaware State Police.
Corporal Rashawn Rich noted that having a school resource officer already on site helped prevent the situation from escalating further. Action News reported the teen remained in custody on the $87,000 bond.
