Satellite imagery indicates China is building a roughly 200–205 m hull at Hudong‑Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai that analysts say is a purpose‑built mothership for full‑size uncrewed submarines. The design reportedly combines a bottom‑opening well deck, a 12‑arm handling cradle and an internal hangar estimated to hold up to four XXLUUVs of 35–45 m each. The assembly dock measures about 340 m (≈1,115 ft), though the hull itself is smaller than a WWII Essex‑class carrier. If confirmed, the platform could extend the operational reach of large uncrewed undersea vehicles and pose new strategic challenges for regional navies and their allies.

Satellite imagery and open-source analysis suggest China is building a large surface vessel purpose-built to carry, launch, recover, and maintain full-size uncrewed submarines. The hull, under construction at Hudong‑Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai, has been photographed and discussed by open-source analysts and defence outlets, though Beijing has not publicly acknowledged the project.

What the Imagery Shows

Analysts led by the Japanese open-source account KAROTASU first posted images of the hull on September 13, 2026; H.I. Sutton assessed the discovery for Naval News two days later, and Defence Security Asia published additional imagery dated September 15. The hull is berthed in a dock that some analysts describe as a "340m-class" slipway — roughly 1,115 ft — though that refers to the dock length rather than the ship.

Dimensions and Design Features

Reported hull estimates vary slightly: KAROTASU places the hull at about 200 m long and 30 m wide, while Defence Security Asia estimates roughly 205 m by 27 m (about 656–673 ft). That makes the vessel substantial in size but still shorter than a World War II Essex‑class carrier (872–888 ft overall).

Imagery and analyst commentary indicate several distinctive features:

  • A bottom‑opening well deck for deploying/submerging vehicles.
  • A 12‑arm cradle system, apparently for handling large undersea vehicles.
  • An enclosed internal hangar large enough, experts estimate, to house up to four extra‑extra‑large uncrewed underwater vehicles (XXLUUVs).

The XXLUUVs and Their Capabilities

Reported XXLUUV sizes range from about 35 m to 45 m (115–148 ft), comparable to small crewed submarines. A Chinese shipbuilder has previously exhibited a similar concept that suggested ranges up to an estimated 10,000 nautical miles, though this specific vessel and its drone complements remain unconfirmed by official sources.

Potential Operational Impact

If the vessel is intended as a dedicated XXLUUV mothership, it would offer capabilities beyond the current approach of using floating docks and shore-based infrastructure for trials. A purpose-built platform with an internal hangar and onboard maintenance could:

  • Extend the operational reach and persistence of large uncrewed submarines.
  • Reduce dependence on shore facilities and favorable sea conditions for deployment.
  • Improve at-sea maintenance, resupply, and rapid re-tasking of unmanned systems.

Such a capability would have strategic implications for anti-submarine warfare, undersea surveillance, and power projection, complicating maritime planning for regional navies and allies.
