Meadowbrook High Student Suffers Life-Threatening Brain Injuries After Hallway Assault

Irvin E. Rodriguez Gaitan, a student at Meadowbrook High School in Virginia, sustained life-threatening brain injuries after an alleged assault in a school hallway on Monday, Sept. 14, his family said.

According to the family, the altercation began when Rodriguez accidentally bumped into another student while walking with his girlfriend. The family said the other student then allegedly attacked Rodriguez, prompting school staff and a School Resource Officer (SRO) to call EMS when Rodriguez appeared critically injured.

Local police confirmed they were investigating the incident as an assault. In a social media post on Sept. 14, the Chesterfield County Police Department said:

Police are on scene at Meadowbrook High School after an assault. There is no ongoing threat at this time, but the school is in a secured status while Police investigate.

The school division said the campus was initially placed on lockdown and later moved to a hold status, during which students remained in their classrooms and instruction continued.

Police and local media reported no weapons were involved. The student accused in the attack, who is a minor, was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and is being held at a juvenile detention center; authorities did not release the suspect’s name because of their age.

Rodriguez was transported to a hospital and taken to the intensive care unit, where his family said he suffered life-threatening brain injuries. In the days after the assault, his condition began to improve. An update on a GoFundMe organized by his brother, Kevin Rodriguez, said Irvin regained consciousness, was able to speak and eat a little while still in the ICU.

The family later announced Rodriguez had been released from intensive care and had returned home. Kevin wrote, “My parents, sister and I are happy and grateful to share that my brother is finally HOME! ❤️” The family cautioned that he still faces a long recovery and asked for continued prayers and support as he undergoes rehabilitation.

The GoFundMe campaign was created to help cover medical bills, transportation, rehabilitation costs and lost income while family members care for Rodriguez. The family and local authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact law enforcement.
