Thousands of mourners filled the streets of western Uganda on Sept. 12 as the casket of Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was escorted to the Tooro Kingdom's royal burial grounds following his death in late August.
The 34-year-old monarch, who became the world's youngest reigning traditional king at age 3, died on Aug. 27 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. His body was flown back to Uganda and taken to St. John's Cathedral in Fort Portal, where a private burial ceremony was held.
Procession and Ceremony
Photographs published by international outlets showed vast crowds gathered outside as the king's coffin — draped in the Tooro Kingdom flag — was guided by men in military dress and traditional attire. A procession of mourners, many dressed in black, walked more than six miles on foot to the cathedral, the site where Rukidi IV had once been baptized, before the private ceremony began.
Life and Reign
Born in 1992, Rukidi IV ascended to the Tooro throne at age 3 after the death of his father, Olimi Tooro, on Aug. 26, 1995. During his minority a regency of family members and involvement from Uganda's president, Yoweri Museveni, oversaw the kingdom. His formal crowning took place on April 17, 2010 — the day after his 18th birthday.

Rukidi IV was the 13th monarch of the Tooro Kingdom, a traditional cultural institution founded more than two centuries ago. Guinness World Records recognized him as the world's youngest reigning monarch. Though he held no constitutional political power like other traditional leaders in Uganda, he served as a prominent cultural figure for more than two million people in the region.
Causes and Initiatives
Throughout his reign, Rukidi IV promoted youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, health initiatives and HIV/AIDS awareness. He launched the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045 development framework aimed at improving livelihoods and securing long-term prosperity for his people.
Succession Dispute
The king's unexpected death has triggered a contested succession. Clan elders named his cousin, Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, 56, as the next monarch, but that appointment was rejected by some royal family members, including the late king's mother. Adding to the controversy, Princess Ruth Komuntale — Rukidi IV's sister — said the king left a will dated 2022 naming his son as successor. Rukidi IV was not publicly married, and the existence of a son only came to light after the monarch's death, according to international reports.
"Words spoken in grief can cause pain, division and conflict," Archbishop Stephen Kazimba Mugalu of the Church of Uganda warned at the private ceremony, urging unity during the royal mourning.
President Yoweri Museveni also appealed for a peaceful resolution, saying the succession process should "favor unity over division," according to news agencies covering the funeral and its aftermath.
