King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who first gained international attention when he became the world’s youngest reigning monarch as a toddler, was laid to rest after dying on 27 August at the age of 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States.

On 12 September, thousands of mourners lined the streets of Fort Portal as a requiem mass was held at St. John’s Cathedral. The Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, and Princess Ruth Komuntale were among senior royals dressed in mourning black as the king’s casket, flanked by royal guards, was taken in procession to the Karambi Royal Tombs for burial. A private interment ceremony reportedly followed.

In the days after his death, family members and government officials gathered at Entebbe Airport on 4 September for an emotional homecoming and transfer ceremony when the late king’s body returned to Uganda.

Background
Oyo inherited the Tooro Kingdom throne as a toddler in 1995 after the sudden death of his father, Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, and was widely described as the world’s youngest monarch. He assumed full royal responsibilities in 2010 upon reaching adulthood and served as the kingdom’s cultural leader for nearly three decades.
Tooro is one of the traditional kingdoms in western Uganda. Its monarch holds significant cultural and ceremonial influence for the people of the region, though the role carries no formal political power within Uganda’s national government.
“This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda,” Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki said. He urged people to remain “united, calm and prayerful” and added that “the continuity of the Crown is assured.”
Succession Dispute
The late king’s death has triggered a dispute over succession. A committee of the royal clan selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, 56, an editor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation and Oyo’s cousin, as the kingdom’s new monarch. At the same time, Oyo’s immediate family have asserted that the late king’s unnamed son — reportedly born out of wedlock — is the rightful heir. The identity of any formally recognized successor will be announced in line with Tooro’s customary processes.
As Tooro and Uganda mourn, the kingdom now faces a sensitive period of ritual, legal and family deliberations over the future custodianship of its crown and traditions.
