Quick Take: Yesterday’s primaries produced mixed results for Trump-backed candidates, with notable wins and upsets in Florida and other states. The DOJ plans to deploy about 1,000 federal monitors for November — a major rise from 2022. Other headlines: a three-day pause on U.S. tariffs with Canada, a six-week Meta court hearing on youth impacts, and NASA released images of a ~60-foot lunar crater from a SpaceX crash.

Voters in yesterday's primaries produced a mix of expected outcomes and surprising upsets, delivering uneven results for candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump while advancing several high-profile contests ahead of November.

Florida: Competitive Primaries, A Few Upsets

In Florida's races to replace Gov. Ron DeSantis, Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly each won their gubernatorial primaries and now move toward general-election matchups. In the Senate contest, Republican Attorney General Ashley Moody secured the GOP nomination, while progressive state Rep. Angie Nixon upset a better-funded Democratic opponent to win her party's primary.

Other State Races

Across the country, several competitive contests also advanced. In Alaska, incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola advanced in a closely watched Senate contest. In Wyoming, Trump’s preferred gubernatorial pick, Megan Degenfelder, was defeated by state Sen. Eric Barlow. Counting continued in a special U.S. House race in California.

Election Oversight: DOJ Plans Major Monitoring Effort

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division intends to deploy roughly 1,000 federal monitors to polling locations in November — a substantial increase from the 289 monitors sent during the 2022 midterms. Officials say the operation will require careful planning and will stretch an already reduced DOJ workforce.

Trade and International Relations

President Trump announced a three-day pause on planned U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods while negotiations continued. He linked the pause to talks related to the canceled Keystone XL pipeline and declared on social media that "Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!"

Tech, Courts and Kids

A six-week court hearing in California opened this week to examine allegations that Meta, Facebook’s parent company, intentionally engineered products that hooked a generation of young users. Plaintiffs argued the company’s design choices fostered addictive behavior among children; Meta’s lawyers countered that social-media addiction is not a recognized diagnosable condition.
