UKMTO reports a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an "unknown projectile," damaging its engine room and causing a crew casualty. The Omani coastguard is assisting remaining crew and no environmental impact has been reported so far. Authorities are investigating while advising vessels to exercise caution amid continued disruptions to shipping in the strait.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) says a vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an "unknown projectile," damaging its engine room and causing a crew casualty.

Incident Details

UKMTO reported the strike early on Tuesday after the ship's company security officer notified the agency. The Omani coastguard is assisting the remaining crew aboard the vessel.

Response and Investigation

UKMTO said there has been no reported environmental impact so far. Authorities are investigating the incident, including attempts to determine who or what was responsible. The agency has advised all vessels transiting the strait to exercise heightened caution and to report any suspicious activity immediately.

Wider Context

The strike adds to severe disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Daily vessel crossings have fallen to the single digits, down from more than 130 a day before the conflict that began on February 28. Iran effectively blocked the strait after the conflict began, has frequently attacked commercial ships and has signalled intentions to charge users for passage.

A memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran intended to ease hostilities and reopen the waterway expired on Monday. Separately, Iran and Oman continue talks about future navigation arrangements through the strait.

Note: UKMTO and local authorities continue to provide updates; details remain subject to confirmation as investigations proceed.
