A 20-year-old man, Zachary Nicholas Mertens of Burlington, Kentucky, died after falling roughly 177 feet from South Falls at Silver Falls State Park on Aug. 10. Investigators say witnesses, photos and video indicate he entered a closed area to pose for pictures before slipping. Attempts at CPR by a fellow visitor were unsuccessful and Mertens was pronounced dead at the scene. Park officials called the incident 'a pretty horrific accident' and reiterated the importance of obeying closures for safety.

A 20-year-old man, identified as Zachary Nicholas Mertens of Burlington, Kentucky, died after falling approximately 177 feet from the top of South Falls at Silver Falls State Park on Monday, Aug. 10.

Oregon State Police say investigators reviewed witness accounts, photographs and video and determined Mertens had crossed into a closed-off area to pose for pictures before slipping and falling. The incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m.; park visitors and first responders were on scene soon after.

Another parkgoer attempted CPR, but Mertens was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later recovered at the base of the falls. A friend reportedly notified his family before Oregon State Police provided formal updates.

Park reaction and context

Silver Falls State Park regional manager Chris Gilliand described the event as 'a pretty horrific accident' and called it 'a very tough situation.' The park, often billed as the 'crown jewel' of Oregon State Parks, is home to the popular Trail of Ten Falls, which features South Falls — a 177-foot cascade that visitors can view and pass behind along designated routes.

While Remote Double Falls is technically the park's tallest waterfall by one foot, South Falls remains the park's most visited attraction. According to Oregon State Parks, the full Trail of Ten Falls covers about 7.2 miles with roughly 800 feet of elevation change. Silver Falls State Park spans approximately 9,000 acres and offers more than 35 miles of backcountry trails.

Safety reminder

Park officials emphasize the importance of staying within marked areas and obeying closures and barriers for visitor safety. This tragic incident underscores the risks visitors face when entering restricted sections of natural attractions to take photographs.
