A worker at a free-fall tower ride at Munich's Oktoberfest died after sustaining serious injuries in an accident on Monday evening, police said early Tuesday. Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected workplace accident and have opened an investigation.
Police said the 52-year-old man appears to have been in a restricted part of the ride when he was struck and may have been crushed. Emergency personnel resuscitated him at the scene and transported him to hospital with life-threatening injuries; he later died.
Officials emphasized that passengers on the ride were not in danger. A crisis intervention team was deployed to support witnesses, and the immediate area around the attraction was cordoned off while emergency services responded.

The 191st Oktoberfest opened on Saturday and will run until October 4. The world-famous festival typically draws more than 6 million visitors each year; about 600 police officers and hundreds of security staff are deployed across the grounds during the event.
Police said their inquiries are ongoing and that further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
