Ukraine strikes rocket and space centre in Russia's Samara

Ukrainian forces said they struck the Progress Rocket and Space Centre in Samara with FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles, and also hit Savasleyka air base and an oil facility at Ust-Luga. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed hits and reported fires at the Progress centre and Savasleyka, noting the Progress site produces launch vehicles used for Russian military satellites. Separately, Ukraine said Russia launched 152 drones overnight, with air defences neutralising 124, and regional officials reported multiple civilian casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that Ukrainian forces struck the Progress Rocket and Space Centre in Russia's Samara region, a facility involved in manufacturing and operating space launch vehicles and rockets.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy said the centre was hit using FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles, calling the site one of Russian space agency Roscosmos' "key enterprises" and noting its role in electronics production. He also said additional strikes targeted the Savasleyka air base in Nizhny Novgorod and an oil facility at Ust-Luga near the Estonian border.

Official Confirmations and Damage

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine later provided further details, confirming hits at both the Progress centre and Savasleyka air base and reporting fires at the struck sites. Ukrainian authorities said the launch vehicles produced at the Progress centre are used to place Russian military, reconnaissance and communications spacecraft into orbit.

The General Staff added that Savasleyka is used to operate MiG-31K fighter jets, which Ukraine says can carry Kh-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missiles. Video shared on X by Zelenskyy appears to show large columns of black smoke and flames at distant sites following the strikes.

Context: Deep Strikes and Energy Targets

Kyiv has repeatedly carried out strikes deep inside Russia to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin, degrade military capabilities and target economic infrastructure. In recent months Ukraine has focused on energy facilities—refineries, terminals and depots—aiming to reduce Russia's war-sustaining capacity and create economic pressure.

Russian Attacks And Civilian Casualties In Ukraine

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russian forces launched 152 drones and loitering munitions overnight; preliminary data reported 124 of those were shot down or neutralised by air defences, with strikes recorded in 16 locations across the country.

Regional authorities reported multiple civilian casualties: 28 people injured, including a child, after attacks in Kherson; a child killed and 11 people injured in Dnipropetrovsk; four injured in Sumy; and nine injured across Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions.

Zelenskyy: "Our plan of long-range sanctions against Russia for this war is being implemented, and it is important that Russia's war potential be reduced."

Officials on both sides have offered differing narratives about the scope and impact of the strikes; Ukrainian confirmations and footage have not been independently verified by third-party sources at the time of publication.
