Overview: President Trump asserted the U.S. has "massive amounts" of munitions even as officials acknowledge significant depletion of Patriot and THAAD missile stocks. June negotiations between U.S. and Iranian delegations aim to end the war, but strikes and skirmishes — including along the Strait of Hormuz — continue.

Key developments: Israel struck Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and Israel-Lebanon talks were paused and are set to resume; Iran and Oman are drafting a shipping corridor agreement for the Hormuz; the U.N. reported at least 56 recent executions in Iran amid serious due-process concerns; maritime traffic remains reduced and risky.

President Donald Trump declared on Feb. 28 that "major combat operations" had begun against Iran, describing large-scale, joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites. Despite a memorandum of understanding and June negotiations between U.S. and Iranian delegations aimed at a war-ending deal, exchanges of strikes have continued and the Strait of Hormuz remains a key flashpoint.

Munitions Debate And Official Responses

Late Wednesday, after reporting that U.S. air-defense stockpiles had been significantly drawn down, Mr. Trump posted on social media that the United States has "massive amounts of 'munitions'" and said "large amounts are being manufactured and shipped to the U.S. as needed." He also warned that suspected "leakers" making what he described as "treasonous statements" were being pursued and that "long term jail sentences will be sought."

"We have far more munitions than anyone in the world, and far more than we need," the White House provided to ABC News quoted the president as saying.

U.S. officials have acknowledged substantial depletion of some air-defense missile inventories during the recent fighting: one official said Patriot missile stockpiles have been reduced by about two-thirds and THAAD reserves by roughly half. The White House pushed back against claims of dangerously low supplies. "The United States Military has more than enough munitions, ammo, and stockpiles to serve all of President Trump's strategic goals and beyond," White House Principal Deputy Spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement provided to ABC News.

Diplomacy, Warnings And Military Posture

After delivering remarks in Las Vegas, Mr. Trump said diplomatic channels with Iran appear to be "working out quite well," while cautioning that outcomes remain uncertain. He repeated that military action remains an option: "We are ready to go." The president said he prefers a negotiated settlement to avoid loss of life, but emphasized that strong military pressure influenced Tehran's willingness to talk.

Regional Developments

The Israel Defense Forces said it struck Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon after alleging ceasefire violations. Ahead of the strikes, the IDF issued evacuation warnings for the village of Al-Mansouri. Separately, talks between Israel and Lebanon in Rome were paused early amid complaints about leaks but were expected to resume, with U.S. officials describing progress on technical implementation of a Trilateral Framework.

Iran and Oman are finalizing a joint statement to establish safe passage arrangements for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said. The two sides have reportedly agreed on proposed geographic coordinates for a shipping corridor and are drafting a final joint text.

Human Rights And Maritime Risk

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said Iran executed at least 56 people on national-security-related charges since March 19, including 27 tied to nationwide protests, and warned more than 100 people remain at risk of execution. Türk expressed grave concerns about due process, alleging reports of coerced confessions, public executions and very short closed hearings in some cases.

Maritime intelligence firm Kpler reported maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained constrained, with eight vessels transiting on Tuesday — down from 10 the previous day. Kpler said "maritime risk remains elevated," and most transits were outbound via routes passing through Iranian waters.

Yahya Saree, spokesperson for Yemen's Houthi armed forces, claimed on social media that Houthi forces struck a Saudi oil tanker off Yanbu on the Red Sea coast using ballistic missiles. The claim has been reported by regional sources but remains to be independently verified.
