Scottish swimmer Archie Goodburn, a Commonwealth Games finalist, made an emotional appeal on BBC Breakfast asking for greater UK investment in brain cancer research and for a national lead to coordinate care. Goodburn — diagnosed at 22 with three "low-grade" but inoperable tumours — said clinical trials exist in the US but are largely unavailable in Britain. A viral clip of his interview prompted Labour politician Andy Burnham to thank Goodburn publicly, offer to meet him, and say his team would make contact, though no independent confirmation of follow-up has been reported.

Labour politician Andy Burnham has publicly responded to a moving video in which Scottish swimmer Archie Goodburn urged the government to step up research and support for brain cancer patients. Goodburn’s appeal — broadcast on BBC Breakfast and widely shared on TikTok — drew millions of views and sparked renewed public attention to gaps in UK research and trials.

Goodburn, a Commonwealth Games finalist in the 50-metre breaststroke, described the impact of his diagnosis and asked for a national lead on brain cancer to coordinate research and care. During the interview he became visibly emotional; according to the BBC, he was diagnosed at 22 with three "low-grade" but inoperable brain tumours.

Andy Burnham Responds to Archie Goodburn’s Emotional Plea for More Brain Cancer Research

"Andy Burnham, if you believe and you want to make a change and difference to the future of our country and our young population, please listen to us. Please establish a national brain cancer lead and give us a chance to fight for our lives because, honestly, the things that patients are going through out there are just unbelievable and so unjust." — Archie Goodburn

A clip of the interview went viral on TikTok. Burnham replied beneath the viral post, thanking Goodburn and offering to meet him. He wrote: "Archie, thank you for this. I know how hard it must have been. What you are doing for other people, while you are going through all this yourself, shows the best of us. I'd really like to meet you and hear from you directly, and I've asked my team to get in touch."

It is important to note that Andy Burnham is a senior Labour politician and the Mayor of Greater Manchester, not the UK prime minister. Goodburn’s plea was directed at national leaders and the wider government to improve research infrastructure; he also said that clinical trials are currently available in the United States but not in the UK, a point that highlights perceived gaps in access to experimental treatments.

Burnham’s public reply prompted significant online discussion, but there has been no independent confirmation that his team has yet contacted Goodburn. The story was reported by Aman Sharma for Reality Tea and originally appeared on Mandatory.
