A Nice court convicted two men over livestreamed abuse involving streamer Jean Pormanove, finding them guilty of grievous bodily harm, incitement to hatred, online violence and discrimination. One received a two-year suspended sentence and a €10,000 fine; the other an 18-month suspended sentence and a €5,000 fine. Both face six-month social media bans and confiscation of IT equipment. Pormanove was beaten on a live stream in August and died hours later from a medical incident; a post-mortem found his death was not directly caused by the assault.
Two Men Convicted Over Livestreamed Abuse After French Streamer's On‑Camera Death

A court in Nice on Wednesday found two men guilty for their roles in livestreams involving a prominent French streamer who later died after being filmed. The defendants were convicted on charges that included grievous bodily harm, incitement to hatred, online violence and discrimination.
One man received a two-year suspended prison sentence and was fined €10,000 (about $11,000); the other was given an 18-month suspended sentence and fined €5,000. Both were banned from using social networks for six months and had all their IT equipment seized by authorities.
The streamer, known online by the stage name Jean Pormanove, attracted hundreds of thousands of followers through gaming broadcasts and staged extreme challenges intended to draw viewers. In August last year, Pormanove was beaten during a live broadcast. He died several hours later after suffering a choking fit in his sleep while still being filmed.
A post-mortem examination concluded that the 46-year-old’s death was caused by a medical condition and not directly by the physical abuse he endured during the stream. The two convicted men, aged 24 and 27, ran the channel that broadcast the assault and were implicated in organizing the content shown that night.
Prosecutors had previously questioned them after earlier reports of mistreatment; at the time the men insisted the incidents were staged to make money, a claim echoed by Pormanove himself. In the period before his death, however, the violence appeared to escalate beyond what he accepted: according to broadcaster BFMTV, he texted his mother,
“I’m fed up, I want to leave.”
Legal and Social Context
Judges handed suspended sentences and financial penalties, and ordered social-media bans and equipment seizures—measures that reflect growing concern about accountability for online content that can inflict harm. The convictions highlight legal scrutiny of livestreamed abuse and exploitation, even when producers claim the scenes were staged.
Note: The court’s verdict focuses on the defendants’ roles in producing and broadcasting abusive content; the medical finding that Pormanove’s death was not directly caused by the assault remains part of the official record.
