Joel Lake Bremer was arrested Aug. 2 and charged with second-degree murder in the 1988 disappearance and death of his pregnant wife, Ronna Bremer (22 at the time). A 1989 DNA sample, reprocessed with modern technology, produced a profile investigators say ties him to the case. The cold case was reopened in Nov. 2024 with help from a documentary team; Joel was indicted July 24 and arrested by U.S. Marshals on July 31. He is in custody on a $200,000 bond after a first court appearance on Aug. 3.
Joel Lake Bremer Arrested After DNA Break In 1988 Killing Of Pregnant Wife

A man has been arrested and charged after investigators say modern DNA technology linked him to the decades-old killing of his pregnant wife.
Joel Lake Bremer was booked into the Christian County Jail in Christian County, Missouri, on Aug. 2, according to inmate records reviewed by PEOPLE. He faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the 1988 disappearance and death of his wife, Ronna Bremer, who was 22 and pregnant at the time.
'What's been going on for the last 30-some years, it's so close to the point of being adjudicated and somebody being brought to justice that I think it brings satisfaction for everybody,' Sheriff Cole of the Christian County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) told local station KY3.
Investigation And Evidence
Joel reported Ronna missing in 1988 and was later granted a divorce from her in 1990, KY3 reported. In 1991 the Green County Sheriff's Office received an anonymously mailed skull; officials sent it to the University of Colorado for testing. Investigators officially declared Ronna dead in 1997, and additional testing identified the skull as hers in 2001. Over the ensuing decades the file was periodically reopened but produced few tangible leads until recently.
Reopened Case And DNA Breakthrough
Detectives with the Christian County Sheriff's Office reopened the investigation in November 2024, working with a documentary team. The renewed probe included work in Iowa and Nebraska and revisited physical evidence. A DNA sample collected in 1989 was reprocessed using modern technology, producing a profile investigators say links Joel to the crime.
Arrest, Indictment And Next Steps
Joel was indicted on July 24 and arrested in Kansas City by the U.S. Marshals Service on July 31, according to NewsNation. He was extradited to Christian County and made his first court appearance on Aug. 3. He is being held on a $200,000 bond. PEOPLE has contacted the Christian County Sheriff's Office and the Greene County Sheriff's Office for comment.
