Publix expanded a recall on July 29 to cover all lots of GreenWise frozen blueberries and mixed berries after a link to a multistate E. coli O145 outbreak. The recalled products were sold across eight southeastern and mid-Atlantic states; sales were halted internally at the end of June. The supplier, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of Chile, was placed on FDA Import Alert 99-35 after a remote inspection. Public health officials reported 12 confirmed cases and four hospitalizations tied to an earlier recalled lot, and the investigation is ongoing.
Publix Expands Recall to All GreenWise Frozen Berries After Multistate E. coli O145 Link

Publix on July 29 expanded a recall to include all lots of its GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries after public health officials linked the frozen fruit products to a multistate Escherichia coli O145 outbreak. The broader recall follows an earlier action that covered a single lot.
What Was Recalled
The expanded recall covers four frozen berry products:
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10 oz (UPC 41415-06453)
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48 oz (UPC 41415-12053)
- GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10 oz (UPC 41415-06753)
- GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48 oz (UPC 41415-12153)
Distribution And Supplier
The recalled products were shipped to Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Publix halted internal sales of the frozen GreenWise berries at the end of June and says the items have not been available for purchase since then.
The berries were supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., based in San Carlos, Chile. Following a remote inspection, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified concerns about at least one additional lot and added the supplier to Import Alert 99-35, which allows detention of the firm's frozen blueberries at the U.S. border without physical examination.
Health Risk
The outbreak involves Escherichia coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin–producing strain that can cause severe abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea that may be bloody. While many otherwise healthy people recover without specific treatment, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that affects the kidneys.
Confirmed Illnesses And Earlier Recall
On July 3, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. recalled a single lot of 10-ounce GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries with lot code 60401 and a best-by date of February 9, 2028. At that time, public health officials reported 12 confirmed E. coli O145 illnesses in Florida and Georgia, including four hospitalizations and no deaths. Reported illnesses occurred between May 11 and June 5, 2026.
