A Houston rental-car owner says he was dragged across a motel parking lot after confronting a renter who allegedly used a fake Texas driver’s license. Surveillance footage captured the July 17 incident at the Mustang Inn on Tidwell Road. Authorities arrested 27-year-old Nicholas Yoder on July 23; he now faces multiple felony charges and is linked to more than 20 felony cases dating back to 2015. Crime Stoppers noted a parole-issued “blue warrant” was active after his arrest.

A routine car rental in Houston turned dangerous when a small rental-car owner says he was dragged across a motel parking lot after confronting a renter who allegedly used a fake Texas driver’s license. Surveillance footage of the July 17 incident at the Mustang Inn on Tidwell Road captured the encounter and was later shared with local news outlets.

What Happened

The owner, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, says a man rented one of his SUVs with what later proved to be a counterfeit Texas ID. After tracking the vehicle down and approaching the driver to question him, the owner was reportedly pulled and dragged as the SUV accelerated away across the motel parking area. Surveillance video shows the moment the vehicle moved while the owner still had hold of it.

“I’m pretty shaken up about it because I did get dragged by a car,” the owner told KPRC 2.

Arrest and Charges

Houston police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Nicholas Yoder and arrested him on July 23, nearly a week after the confrontation, according to Click2Houston. Yoder faces multiple felony charges, including Fraud and Use or Possession of Identifying Information, and Evading Arrest and Detention with a Previous Conviction.

Records reviewed at the Harris County District Clerk’s office connect Yoder to more than 20 felony cases dating back to 2015, including prior convictions for being a felon in possession of a weapon. Andy Kahan of Crime Stoppers of Houston said parole issued a "blue warrant" after Yoder’s arrest — a high-priority warrant in the Texas system.

Broader Concerns and Takeaways

While stories about stolen cars, key-fob hacks and VIN fraud are common, this incident highlights how easily identification and paperwork can be exploited — and the risks small operators face when trying to recover property. Rental transactions are typically low-drama: present ID, sign paperwork, drive away. This case serves as a reminder to verify IDs carefully and avoid confrontations when a situation feels unsafe.

If you manage a rental fleet or lend a vehicle to others, consider spending a few extra minutes checking identification, asking for a secondary form of ID, or involving law enforcement rather than attempting to recover a vehicle in person.
