Airbus A400M Makes First Operational Firefighting Drops Near Bordeaux Using Roll‑On Kit
First-ever real deployment: Airbus A400M uses firefighting kit to fight French wildfires

The French Air and Space Force has used an Airbus A400M fitted with a removable roll‑on firefighting tank operationally for the first time near Bordeaux. The module holds about 20,000 litres (≈22 tonnes) and can discharge its load in under 10 seconds without requiring structural modifications to the aircraft. Tested since 2022 and formalised in a 2024 partnership, the capability is intended to complement — not replace — dedicated firefighting aircraft and offers a high‑capacity option when multiple fires strain resources.

A French Air and Space Force A400M Atlas has made its first operational firefighting drops using a roll‑on/roll‑off firefighting kit, joining suppression efforts near Bordeaux during a severe wildfire season affecting southern France and neighbouring Spain.

What Happened

The French Air and Space Force publicly unveiled the roll‑on capability on 24 July and confirmed the system was in use during the current emergency. The kit — developed by Airbus Defence and Space in cooperation with the French military and France's Civil Security Directorate — installs as a removable tank module inside the A400M's cargo bay and can be removed so the aircraft returns to its transport role without structural changes.

Key Technical Details

The removable tank holds about 20,000 litres (≈22 tonnes / 5,283 gallons) of water or fire retardant and can discharge the full load in under 10 seconds through two independent doors at the end of the loading ramp, creating a wide dispersal pattern over the target area. The A400M's cargo compartment measures roughly 58 ft (17.7 m) long by 13 ft (4 m) wide and the aircraft has a maximum payload of about 40 tonnes.

Because the system loads at an airport rather than scooping from lakes or reservoirs, each sortie is not limited by nearby water sources.

Operational Role and Context

French authorities emphasize the A400M is intended to supplement, not replace, dedicated firefighting aircraft such as the Canadair CL‑415. Its principal mission in wildfire operations is to lay long retardant lines ahead of advancing fire fronts to slow or redirect flames before they reach populated areas or critical infrastructure.

This season, France and Spain have faced multiple large blazes simultaneously, stretching aerial firefighting resources and prompting mass evacuations in some regions. The A400M's large payload and ability to operate from standard military airfields make it a flexible asset when dedicated firefighting fleets are overwhelmed.

Development and Commercial Angle

Airbus began trials of the roll‑on kit with the Spanish Air Force in 2022 and carried out two years of flight evaluations. A formal development partnership with the French military's Air Expertise Center and France's Civil Security Directorate was established in 2024, paving the way for operational evaluation during the current season. Airbus also views the kit as a way to broaden the A400M's appeal to potential customers and extend the programme beyond its original national customers.

Why it matters: The roll‑on firefighting kit gives militaries a rapid, reversible firefighting capability that scales up single‑sortie water delivery compared with traditional scoopers — useful when multiple large fires threaten wide areas simultaneously.
