The Israel Internet Association has warned WhatsApp users to back up important data after a weekend wave of account suspensions across Israel. Reports collected by the Safe Internet Hotline indicate many accounts were blocked after users messaged businesses or contacts they believed legitimate. The association has asked Meta for answers and was requested to compile suspended account numbers; no response has been received so far. Officials advise keeping independent copies of critical information rather than relying solely on app-linked cloud backups.

The Israel Internet Association has urged WhatsApp users in Israel to back up any important data after a weekend surge of account suspensions that left many people unable to access the messaging service.

What Happened

Over the weekend, dozens of Israelis reported that their WhatsApp accounts were suspended after sending what they described as harmless messages. The Safe Internet Hotline, represented by Yonatan Ben-Horin, told 103FM that the pattern of reports he and his team received was unusual compared with the hotline's typical caseload.

"Most of the inquiries we usually receive involve reports of harmful content, abusive accounts, or harmful trends on social media," Ben-Horin said. "This weekend was different. We began getting a steady trickle of reports from people whose accounts were suspended after they had sent entirely innocent messages to a business or to someone they were trying to reach."

Common Thread

After reviewing the cases, the association found a consistent detail: the suspended accounts often had recently messaged businesses or similar commercial recipients. In many cases the recipients were not unknown numbers but businesses or contacts the senders believed were legitimate. Initially, investigators suspected the issue might involve messages to numbers not saved in contacts, but the pattern suggested a broader problem.

"It's alarming because we rely on WhatsApp to communicate with practically everyone," Ben-Horin added. "As the Israel Internet Association, we maintain reporting channels with the platforms. Given how many Israelis were affected and WhatsApp's critical role, we contacted Meta. They requested that we compile the list of suspended account numbers. So far we have not received a response, and I am still gathering reports from those whose accounts were suspended over the weekend."

Advice For Users

Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining independent backups. The association warned that relying solely on WhatsApp-linked cloud backups (for example, automatic backups to Google Drive or iCloud) may not be sufficient if an account becomes inaccessible.

Practical steps users can take include exporting important chats, saving screenshots or copies of critical messages, emailing records to themselves, or storing copies on a separate device or secure cloud service not tied exclusively to WhatsApp. The association continues to collect reports and is seeking clarification from Meta.

Key takeaway: If you use WhatsApp for important notes, contacts, or records, create independent backups outside the app to avoid losing access in the event your account is suspended.
