ASU launches content creation degree as creator economy booms

Arizona State University has introduced a bachelor's degree in content creation to equip students for roles in the expanding creator economy, which is projected to reach $500 billion next year. The program combines multimedia production, social media strategy, audience analytics and integrated communication with hands-on learning. Students will complete branded projects, internships and a senior cross-platform capstone to build professional portfolios and grow digital audiences.

Arizona State University has launched a new bachelor's degree in content creation designed to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing creator economy.

Program Purpose and Context

Jessica Pucci, senior associate dean at ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, said the program responds to the changing nature of work and students' growing interest in building independent media businesses. The creator economy is projected to reach $500 billion next year, and ASU designed the degree to combine practical skills with strategic training for digital audiences and platform growth.

"The difference is that jobs today just don't look the same as they used to, and many students tell us that they don't want to work for someone else. They want to create media businesses or monetize their content in a way that gives them full control of their schedules and their income," Pucci said.

Who Creates and Who Earns

Pucci noted that an estimated 200 million people worldwide create online content, and roughly 50 million of them earn money from that work. "To me, that's 150 million opportunities for those creators to create stronger content and stronger connections with their audiences," she added.

Curriculum and Hands-On Learning

The curriculum emphasizes multimedia production, social media strategy, audience analytics and integrated communication. Courses are structured to blend technical training with strategic planning so students can grow channels, build brands and measure audience engagement.

Hands-on experience is central: students will complete branded content projects, participate in media internships, and take content-creation field trips to build professional portfolios. Seniors in the program will finish with a cross-platform capstone project that demonstrates their ability to apply skills across social platforms.

"Ultimately, a college degree remains the best way to advance yourself, your family and your community economically. I don't think there's a content creator out there who wouldn't benefit from having world-class faculty around who are focused solely on their success and their channel growth. So that's what this degree ultimately provides," Pucci said.
