Law Student Charged After Bomb Found In Car. Isobella Perrie Sullivan, 25, has been charged with possession of explosives after a viable bomb—said to contain a timing power unit, a detonator and suspected Semtex—was found in a bag in the rear of a car stopped on the N2 near Carrickmacross. The Defence Forces assessed the device as viable. Bail may be granted on strict conditions including a €15,000 independent surety and daily signing at a Kildare garda station; a further hearing is due on Monday.

A 25-year-old law student, Isobella Perrie Sullivan of Abbeylands Park, Clane, County Kildare, has appeared in Trim District Court charged with possession of explosives after a viable bomb was discovered in a car intercepted in the Republic of Ireland.

Gardaí say the vehicle was stopped by officers on the N2 at Aclint, south of Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, as part of an operation targeting dissident republican activity. A search uncovered a device inside a bag in the rear of the car.

Garda Evidence: A member of the Garda Special Detective Unit told the court the item contained a timing power unit, a detonator and what officers believed to be Semtex. The Irish Defence Forces were called to the scene and assessed the device as a viable bomb.

Ms Perrie Sullivan, who was arrested on Wednesday and brought before a special sitting of Trim District Court on Friday evening, told the court through her defence solicitor that she had been asked to carry a bag to Northern Ireland and claimed she was unaware of its contents. Her solicitor also said she lives with her father in County Kildare, is studying for a law degree and hopes to become a barrister.

The judge indicated he would be prepared to grant bail on strict conditions. Those conditions include an independent surety of €15,000 (£12,800), surrendering her passport, complying with a curfew, providing her phone number to gardaí and signing on daily at a garda station in County Kildare. Ms Perrie Sullivan was remanded in custody pending a further bail hearing scheduled for Monday.

This interception, and the discovery of the device not far from the border with Northern Ireland, is being treated as part of an organised security operation. Gardaí continue to investigate and no further public details have been released at this time.
