Alec Neel Vance Joins the Second Family — JD and Usha Vance Welcome Fourth Child While in Office

Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced the birth of their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday, 19 July in Washington, D.C. In an official statement posted on X, the couple said Usha and the baby are healthy and that the family is thrilled to welcome a new member.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the pair said in the release.
The Vances expressed gratitude to the medical teams involved in the birth: the White House Medical Unit and the medical staff at Walter Reed Medical Center. “The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing. We are deeply thankful for all they have done for our family,” the statement added.
Historical Note
This birth is notable for being the first time in modern U.S. history that the second family has welcomed a child while in office. The last comparable occurrence was in 1870, when Vice President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Ellen, had a child.
Family Background
Baby Alec joins older siblings: brothers Ewan (nine) and Vivek (six), and sister Mirabel (four). The Vances met while studying at Yale Law School in the early 2010s and were married in 2014. They publicly announced the pregnancy in January.
What Influenced Their Decision
Earlier this summer the couple said the September 2025 death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk factored into their thinking about expanding the family. According to reporting, Kirk's widow, Erika, told Usha she regretted "having only two kids with Charlie." Usha told CBS Sunday Morning, "I think it really heightened JD's sense that there was this possibility of having another kid whom he could love as much as the three that we had."
The family has asked for privacy as they enjoy this new chapter together and thanked the public for their well-wishes.
