Greenworks Tools has recalled 554,780 Kobalt‑branded landscaping tools after 34 reports that batteries with built‑in USB‑C ports smoked, sparked or caught fire while charging. The recall affects 24V and 48V lithium‑ion packs used in trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, mowers and pruning saws sold at Lowe's from January–May 2026; no injuries have been reported. Greenworks is offering free replacement batteries that use a dedicated charger instead of USB‑C and includes a prepaid return label, updated manual and warning sticker.

Greenworks Tools has recalled 554,780 Kobalt‑branded landscaping power tools after receiving reports that batteries with built‑in USB‑C charging ports smoked, sparked or caught fire while charging when left inserted in the tool. The recall affects 24V and 48V lithium‑ion battery packs sold with trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, mowers and pruning saws.

What Happened

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says Greenworks received 34 reports of the affected batteries "producing smoke, sparking or catching fire" while charging via the USB‑C port with the battery installed in the tool. There have been no reported injuries or property damage to date.

Which Products Are Affected

The recall covers Kobalt tools sold at Lowe's stores and online between January 2026 and May 2026. The tools were manufactured in Vietnam and China and retailed for between $20 and $482, depending on the model. Only tools and battery packs that include the built‑in USB‑C charging port are included.

What Greenworks Is Doing

Greenworks is offering free replacement batteries that do not use a USB‑C charging port. Replacement packs will ship with a dedicated charging adapter, an updated product manual, a warning sticker for the tool, and a prepaid shipping label to return the recalled battery.

What You Should Do

Stop using any USB‑C battery while it is inserted in the tool. Remove batteries from the tool before charging and submit an online claim with Greenworks to request a free replacement. For additional help, customers can call Greenworks at 1‑888‑266‑7096.

Consumers should check the full list of impacted model numbers on the CPSC and Greenworks websites before returning or replacing batteries.

Key Advice: Do not charge batteries while they remain inserted in the tool. Remove the battery before charging until you have received and installed the replacement pack.
