In a statement released Sunday, the senator said he was hospitalized after the fall, was treated for a mild case of pneumonia and is showing "continued progress." He added that on doctors' advice he will not yet return to the Senate floor to vote.

Some social media users alleged the hospital photo of McConnell and Chao was fabricated because the newspaper visible in the image appeared to be a sports section. Chao — who served as Labor Secretary under President George W. Bush and as Transportation Secretary under President Donald Trump — had been on a long-planned trip to China to support family philanthropic work and met with the U.S. ambassador while there.
