Kevin Guskiewicz Returns to Michigan State After Wild Leadership Saga, Accepts $1.5 Million Salary

Kevin Guskiewicz has reversed course and will remain president of Michigan State University under a new five-year contract worth $1.5 million per year, $500,000 less than a raise the Board had approved. His brief acceptance of the Clemson presidency and the simultaneous exit of Athletic Director J Batt created a period of intense uncertainty on campus. Tom Izzo urged alumni unity and expressed support after Guskiewicz's decision. MSU now retains one of its top leaders while it addresses the fallout from the tumultuous weeks.

Kevin Guskiewicz has decided to remain president of Michigan State University, signing a five-year contract that pays $1.5 million annually — a $500,000 reduction from a $2 million extension the Board of Trustees had earlier approved.

A Roller-Coaster Few Weeks

The sequence of events unfolded rapidly this spring and left the Spartan community reeling. On May 17, the MSU Board approved a pay raise that would have increased Guskiewicz’s compensation to $2 million a year. Days later, Guskiewicz accepted an offer to become Clemson University's 16th president. That announcement was soon followed by other leadership departures, including Athletic Director J Batt’s decision to accept a job at Kentucky.

Because Guskiewicz had a six-month departure window, he remained on MSU's payroll for weeks after accepting the Clemson offer. That extended timeline complicated MSU’s ability to begin a formal search for a successor and contributed to campus uncertainty as the university prepared for the upcoming athletic seasons.

The Turnaround

On July 6 reports confirmed that Guskiewicz told Clemson he would remain at Michigan State for personal reasons. Rather than returning under the previously approved $2 million extension, he agreed to a five-year contract at $1.5 million per year.

Guskiewicz said he understood concerns about his commitment, acknowledged the uncertainty caused by recent decisions, and apologized: 'I recognize that some ... may have questions about my commitment. That is understandable. (MSU) has experienced more than its share of change ... and I regret that my decision-making over the past several weeks added to that uncertainty ... I am sincerely sorry.'

Clemson initially introduced him as its next president on social media before announcing that he had informed the university he would instead remain at Michigan State. MSU followed with its own confirmation.

Impact And Reaction

The university regains one of the two key leaders it seemed poised to lose. J Batt is still expected to depart for Kentucky; MSU reportedly does not intend to retain him. Hall of Fame basketball coach Tom Izzo publicly urged alumni and the Spartan community to rally behind the university and expressed broad support for Guskiewicz's leadership and commitment.

While the immediate crisis has subsided with Guskiewicz’s recommitment, the episode underscores challenges in executive searches, campus stability and donor and alumni confidence. For now, MSU moves forward with its president back in place as the university attempts to restore steadiness after a chaotic leadership stretch.
