A routine traffic stop for suspected impaired driving in southern Louisiana took an extraordinary turn when 40-year-old Victor Rivas allegedly fled officers, jumped from an interstate overpass into swampy wetlands and was bitten by an alligator before being captured and booked.
According to Louisiana State Police and local reports, the sequence began after multiple calls about reckless driving on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish, just west of New Orleans. Investigators say the vehicle — a Toyota Supra — struck a concrete barrier and lost a tire but continued on until it was located in neighboring St. Charles Parish.
Foot Chase Into the Swamp
When troopers stopped the vehicle, they reported Rivas appeared impaired and fled on foot. Troopers say he jumped from an elevated section of Interstate 310 into the swamp below and attempted to hide and evade capture in the wetlands. He was later sighted near Highway 61 but reportedly ran back into the marsh.
Alligator Encounter and Arrest
At some point during the pursuit, authorities said an alligator bit Rivas, injuring his arms. Despite his injuries, he continued to avoid officers until Louisiana State Police used drone technology to track and locate him. He was ultimately taken into custody, transported to a hospital for treatment and then booked into jail.
