At least four people were killed and 38 others injured after two trains collided late on Monday at Bekasi rail station, in the city of Bekasi on the outskirts of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, officials said.

What Happened
The crash involved a commuter line train and a long-distance service. Karina Amanda, a spokesperson for the commuter line operator, said the immediate priority was evacuating passengers and train crew from damaged carriages.

Casualties and Response
In a written statement, Anne Purba of Indonesia's state railway operator confirmed four deaths and said 38 people had been taken to nearby hospitals. She added that all 240 passengers aboard the long-distance train were accounted for and safe. It remained unclear how many people were on the commuter train or how many bystanders may have been hurt.

Rescuers were seen using angle grinders to cut through metal frameworks of train compartments to free commuters who were trapped but still alive. Reuters witnesses reported at least 20 ambulances at the scene, and personnel from Indonesia's national rescue agency assisted with evacuations.

Investigation Underway
"It is possible that the number of victims could continue to rise, but let us hope that the evacuation can be completed quickly," Deputy Parliament Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad told reporters at the site. Jakarta police chief Asep Edi Suheri said investigators were continuing to examine the incident to determine the cause.
Note: Authorities have not yet released details on a probable cause, timetable of events leading to the collision, or the exact number of people aboard the commuter train.
