Bissell Recalls 1.7 Million Steam Cleaners After Burn Reports — Owners Told To Stop Using Attachments

Bissell has issued a large-scale recall after reports that detachable accessories on some of its steam cleaners can unexpectedly detach and expel hot water or steam, posing a serious burn hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on April 9 that about 1.7 million units sold in the United States are included in the recall; roughly 96,000 additional units sold in Canada are also affected.
What Models Are Affected?
The recall covers the Steam Shot OmniReach and Steam Shot Omni models. Affected units were sold online and at major retailers, including Target, Walmart and Amazon, as well as at Bissell's own website. Prices at retail ranged from about $9 to $55 depending on the accessory.
Why Were They Recalled?
According to the CPSC notice, Bissell has received 206 reports of hot water or steam escaping from the units' attachments and 161 reports of burn injuries, including at least one second-degree burn. The hazard stems from detachable accessories that can separate from the steam cleaner during normal use and release hot water or steam onto the user.

What Owners Should Do
Officials urge owners to stop using the recalled attachments immediately. Bissell is offering free replacement attachments. The registration process requires uploading a photo that shows the original attachment accessories have been disposed of in the trash before receiving replacement parts.
Consumers with questions can contact Bissell through the recall website for guidance on obtaining replacement attachments and for additional safety instructions. The CPSC advisory stresses removing and discarding the original attachments right away to prevent further incidents.
