The incident occurred the evening of Dec. 13 at the intersection of Castleberry Road and Buford Dam Road; Muth succumbed to his injuries on Dec. 14.
Incident and Investigation
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Cumming Police Department, first responders arrived at the scene after Muth was hit and transported him to a hospital. "Surrounded by family members, Rob passed away from his injuries," the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said.
"Because Rob was one of our own, the Cumming Police Department is investigating the crash," the sheriff’s office added.
The Cumming Police Department’s traffic investigation team processed the scene, collected evidence, and interviewed witnesses. Officials said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police indicated charges will be filed but emphasized the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Service and Community Response
Muth served 21 years as a sergeant with the Boca Raton Police Department before retiring. He later joined the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office as a Bluecoat security officer from 2022 to 2024 and then continued his service as a volunteer.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office honored Muth’s lengthy volunteer contribution, praising his "dedication, professionalism, and willingness to serve wherever needed," and asked the public to keep his family, friends and the agency’s volunteers in their thoughts.
"Traffic accidents are sudden and devastating events that leave lasting impacts on families and communities," the Cumming Police Department said in a statement, urging continued care and responsibility on the roadways.
This is an active investigation. Authorities ask anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area of Castleberry Road and Buford Dam Road on Dec. 13 to contact the Cumming Police Department.
