Decatur Community Mourns Young Student After Weekend ATV Crash

A small North Texas town is grieving after 13-year-old Robert “Treb” McKinnon of Decatur died when the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) he was riding in overturned on Nov. 29. The crash occurred on a county road in the 300 block of County Road 3250 at about 4:30 p.m., Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger told the Wise County Messenger.

McKinnon was riding with three other minors when the ATV flipped, according to local reports. McKinnon and two other juveniles were taken to Medical City Decatur. The 13-year-old died at that hospital. One of the other youths suffered critical injuries and was later airlifted by PHI Air Medical to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth; another suffered serious injuries and was treated in Decatur. A fourth juvenile received minor injuries and was not transported from the scene.

The Decatur Independent School District said McCarroll Middle School and the wider community are mourning Treb’s death. In a message to families and staff the district asked the community to keep the McKinnon family in their thoughts and prayers and said the school is offering support during this "unimaginable time of grief."

“A gifted athlete and loyal friend, Treb had a way of making others laugh and feel welcomed,” the family obituary reads. It notes Treb dreamed of playing football for Ohio State, loved the Dallas Cowboys and Friday night football, and trained with determination beyond his years.

A fundraiser established to assist the family had raised more than $13,000 by Dec. 4. McKinnon’s funeral was held on Dec. 5. Local emergency officials continue to investigate the crash as family, classmates and neighbors in Decatur and Wise County cope with the loss.
