West Virginia Guard Member Slowly Recovering After Washington Subway Shooting

INWOOD, W.Va. — Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, a member of the West Virginia Air National Guard who was wounded in a Nov. 26 ambush near the White House, is slowly recovering from a head injury, Governor Patrick Morrisey said Friday.

The attack occurred when Wolfe and Spc. Sarah Beckstrom were ambushed while patrolling a subway station roughly three blocks from the White House. Beckstrom died of her injuries the following day.

Gov. Morrisey, quoting Wolfe's parents, said Wolfe's head wound is improving and that 'he's beginning to look more like himself.'

Authorities have charged 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who was also shot during the confrontation, with murder; he has pleaded not guilty.

Wolfe's family expects he will remain in acute care for another two to three weeks, the governor said, and asked West Virginians and Americans to continue keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers.

A vigil was scheduled Friday evening at Musselman High School in Berkeley County to support Wolfe and his family.

Background

Wolfe, 24, of Martinsburg, W.Va., serves in the Force Support Squadron of the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard. Outside his Guard duties, Frontier Communications said he has worked as a lineman since early 2023.

He joined the National Guard in 2019, the year he graduated from Musselman High School. Principal Alicia Riggleman described Wolfe as an engaged, high-achieving student who 'embodied the Applemen spirit, contributing positively to our school community both academically and athletically.'

Wolfe and Beckstrom were among more than 2,000 troops deployed to Washington as part of President Donald Trump’s crime-fighting mission, a deployment that included a temporary takeover of some local policing roles.

The situation remains under investigation as charges proceed in the case.
