Six Workers Hospitalized After Chlorine Exposure at M&M Mars Facility in Cleveland, Tenn.

Seven employees were evaluated Friday morning following a chemical exposure at the M&M Mars manufacturing plant on Peerless Road in Cleveland, Tennessee. The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. and prompted a multi-agency response led by Bradley County EMS and the Cleveland Fire Department.

According to a release from the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office obtained by PEOPLE, one person was transported to Erlanger Medical Center and five others were taken to Bradley Medical Center for further evaluation. A seventh employee received treatment at the scene and was released.

Deputy Chief Pete Van Dusen of the Cleveland Fire Department said workers were exposed to chlorine gas, but the leak was confined to a single area of the plant. "The atmosphere has been cleared with monitoring devices," he said, adding that there was no danger to the public and no ongoing threat outside the facility.

Mars Wrigley, which operates the plant, issued a statement emphasizing that safety is its "top priority," noting that all individuals involved were safe and there was no impact to the surrounding community or to products made at the site. The company said its on-site team worked quickly with first responders to resolve the situation.

Operations and Response

Operations in the affected section were temporarily paused while crews assessed the area and confirmed the atmosphere was safe. Bradley County EMS praised the coordinated response among the Cleveland Fire Department, plant leadership and on-site safety staff.

The Cleveland facility produces a range of candy brands, including M&Ms, Peanut Butter M&Ms (the only plant in the U.S. that produces them), Twix and Altoids mints.

Authorities said additional details may be released as the investigation continues.
