Major Incident Declared After Evacuations in Derby

Local authorities declared a major incident in Derby, central England, after police evacuated around 200 homes following the execution of a warrant at an address on Vulcan Street.

Derbyshire Constabulary said officers acted "based on intelligence about materials" found at the property. Two men — one in his 40s and one in his 50s — were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and remain in police custody. No names have been released.

"I was very shocked, I didn't know what to do. I literally jumped off my bed, put my clothes on, and then I was just letting everyone know [they had to leave]," said 17-year-old local resident Esteban Duda to the BBC.

The British Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carried out a controlled explosion in the area. Police warned residents they "may hear a bang" while the operation was carried out.

Derbyshire Constabulary emphasised the incident is not being treated as terrorism and that there is no ongoing risk to the wider community. As a precaution, residents were advised to be prepared to remain away from their homes for up to 24 hours while checks continue and properties are confirmed clear.

Members of the public who are not at home or who have already evacuated were asked to message the Derbyshire Constabulary Facebook page so officers can confirm properties are clear. Those unable to access social media were asked to call the non-emergency number 101. Officers are also conducting door-to-door checks in the evacuation zone.
