16-Year-Old Eleanor “Ellie” Hague Killed After Hyundai Hits School Minibus in Tadcaster; Several Students Injured

A 16-year-old student, Eleanor “Ellie” Hague, was killed and several classmates were injured after a Hyundai i10 collided with a Mercedes Sprinter school minibus in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1.

The minibus was carrying nine pupils from Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School when the crash occurred. Emergency services attended and carried out life-saving attempts, but Ellie was pronounced dead at the scene.

One other teenage passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. The remaining students and the minibus driver were treated for minor injuries and taken to hospital for checks.

North Yorkshire Police said the Hyundai was driven by a 40-year-old woman from Leeds. She was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has since been released on conditional bail while inquiries continue.

Tadcaster Grammar School issued a statement saying it was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students” and confirmed that support would be provided to pupils and staff. The school was closed on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and was expected to reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Kirsty Poskitt, a representative of North Yorkshire Council, extended her "heartfelt condolences to the young people involved" and to Ellie’s family, describing the crash as "an incredibly sad day for our town." Local authorities are continuing to offer support to affected families and the school community.

Police inquiries remain ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant dashcam footage is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police to assist the investigation.
