A 3-year-old boy identified as Jaxson died after being struck by a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot in Englewood, Florida, on the evening of Nov. 25. The child was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital and died the following morning.

Incident details

The family was parked at 2931 South McCall Road at about 8:25 p.m. local time while the boy’s mother was placing her infant in the car. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the family’s vehicle was parked next to a Jeep. As the Jeep began to move, the toddler walked in front of it and was struck when the vehicle turned right, sustaining critical injuries.

Emergency responders transported Jaxson by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital, roughly 90 miles from the scene. He succumbed to his injuries on Nov. 26. The driver, a 27-year-old woman, was not injured. No arrests have been made; the Florida Highway Patrol is actively investigating the circumstances of the collision.

Family reaction

Jaxson’s grandfather described him as a joyful little boy who loved attending his father’s softball games and playing catch and football. He said he had been looking forward to teaching Jaxson how to fish and expressed sympathy for the driver involved in the crash.

"I feel sorry for her, it’s not her fault," the grandfather said. "I feel bad for her, too. No ill will towards her."

Authorities continue to investigate the incident. No criminal charges have been announced.
