2-Year-Old Dies After Alleged Sexual Assault by Babysitter in Missouri; Suspect Charged

A 2-year-old St. Louis-area boy, Bre'Yon Wells, died after suffering multiple internal and asphyxial injuries that investigators say were inflicted during an alleged sexual assault. The child was left with 21-year-old Nicco Cotton on Oct. 27 and was later found unresponsive at another residence before dying at a hospital. A 2-year-old boy, Bre'Yon Wells, died after suffering severe injuries investigators say were inflicted during an alleged sexual assault by a man his mother trusted to care for him.

Bre'Yon was left in the care of 21-year-old Nicco Cotton on Oct. 27 while his mother worked a 10-hour shift. Authorities say the child was later found unresponsive at a different residence several miles away and was taken to a St. Louis hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Injuries and investigation

Court records reviewed by investigators report that Bre'Yon sustained multiple internal and asphyxial injuries, including a lacerated liver, and other wounds consistent with sexual abuse. According to those records, Cotton admitted to sexually assaulting, biting and strangling the toddler before taking him to the second location.

“My baby was so happy. He was so loving. He loved everybody and everything,” said Bre'Yon's mother, Bianca Wells. “He just wanted to be a kid and enjoy life. I thought that’s what he was doing.”

“He was just the most adorable, sweet little thing,” said Latoya Johnston, Bre'Yon's godmother. “My whole family just broke down.”

Charges and next steps

Cotton surrendered to authorities on Oct. 30 and has been charged with second-degree murder, forcible sodomy, statutory sodomy and abuse of a child resulting in death. He is being held without bond and a court date has not yet been scheduled.

Officials say Bre'Yon's death was the result of the multiple injuries he suffered. The case remains under investigation, and prosecutors will determine how the charges proceed as the court process continues.
