Two High School Scouts Carry Injured Hiker Two Miles Down Mount Lafayette in Two-Hour Rescue

Two senior Scouts from Mashpee High School, Jack Borowski and Brodie Perry, carried an injured hiker about two miles down Mount Lafayette over roughly two hours after she became unable to walk. The woman initially declined help, but the Scouts persisted when they realized the family could not safely manage the descent. Their troop stayed with the group, and local leaders praised the teens for applying Scouting training in a real emergency.

Two senior Scouts from Mashpee High School, Jack Borowski and Brodie Perry, helped carry an injured hiker roughly two miles down Mount Lafayette after she became unable to walk on her own as dusk approached.

The teens were descending the Franconia Range peak when they encountered a young woman and her family struggling on the trail. Perry said the woman's legs were visibly seizing, and Borowski described them as "giving out underneath her." The hikers initially declined assistance, but the Scouts persisted when they realized the family could not safely manage the descent alone.

Once the woman accepted help, Borowski and Perry—supported by their Boy Scout troop—worked quickly and carefully to move her to lower ground. The evacuation took about two hours and covered roughly two miles, with the group racing the approaching darkness. The two Scouts carried the woman under her shoulders while other members of the troop stayed with the family to provide support.

Acting Scoutmaster Pat Flynn said he was not surprised by the teens' response, noting they applied their Scouting training to a real emergency. Borowski is an Eagle Scout, and Perry is expected to receive the rank in January.

Both Scouts said the experience reinforced an important lesson: when someone needs help on the trail, stopping to assist can make a major difference. "Do not ever underestimate your ability to help other people," Borowski said. The teens were also troubled to learn that several hikers had walked past the family without stopping.
