Powerful explosions ripped through an industrial park in Ezeiza, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, late Friday, sparking a massive blaze that sent thick black smoke hundreds of metres into the night sky. The complex is close to the country’s busiest international airport, heightening concerns about the scale and risk of the incident.

Hospital director Carlos Santoro said his facility received 22 injured patients, including a person who suffered a heart attack and a pregnant woman with breathing difficulties. Local media reported a range of injuries; authorities were evacuating nearby neighbourhoods as a precaution.

"The explosions and fire breaking out in the different factories are huge," said Gaston Granados, mayor of Ezeiza, who told C5N television that the blasts shattered windows at his home.

Fire crews continued to battle the flames into early Saturday. Fabian Garcia, civil defence director for Buenos Aires province, described the incident as a prolonged, complex operation: "It is a complex fire. It will be a long fire." Officials warned that flammable materials and multiple affected facilities would complicate suppression efforts.

The industrial park houses several manufacturers, including tyre and chemical producers. Local outlets reported that at least five factories were hit and AFP reporters observed at least one building reduced to ashes.

Response and safety: Emergency services prioritized evacuations and medical care; there were no confirmed fatalities reported at the time. Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the explosions and warned residents to avoid the area while operations continue.
