On April 28, Evans returned Kayson to Kayla inside a covered car seat or stroller and reportedly told her the baby was asleep. Because it was raining, Kayla said she brought the covered stroller into the home. A few minutes later she uncovered it and found Kayson unresponsive and with visible bruising, which she described as "black and blue."

Family members say doctors told them the child had likely been deceased for six to eight hours by the time he was treated, according to the Facebook page established after his death.

Medical findings and charges

A medical examiner later ruled that Kayson died from multiple injuries consistent with child abuse. Chicago police charged Evans with one felony count of murder with strong probability of death or injury. Authorities have not announced separate child-abuse charges, and plea and attorney information for Evans were not immediately available.

"My son didn't deserve that. He was only 2 months... 2 months. He can't fight back," Kayla Flowers told reporters in May.
