Deadly car explosion near Red Fort prompts anti‑terror probe

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian police are investigating a deadly car explosion late Monday near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, officials said Tuesday, as forensic experts worked to determine the cause of the blast. The explosion killed at least eight people and injured several others.

Senior police officials told The Associated Press that a case was registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), India’s principal anti‑terrorism law, which gives investigators broader powers to detain and investigate suspects. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the probe.

The Red Fort is a 17th‑century Mughal citadel and one of India’s most prominent national monuments; an explosion in its vicinity has heightened public concern and drawn immediate attention from national authorities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a scheduled visit to Bhutan, said investigators would "get to the bottom of this conspiracy," according to officials.

Forensic teams continued to examine the scene and related evidence as investigators worked to establish what caused the blast and whether any organized plot was involved. Authorities said the probe is ongoing and that more details are expected as inquiries progress.
